Today we are looking at Genesis chapter 9, verse 11. This is verse God a covenant that He was not going to destroy man or the earth through floods any longer. This covenant is very interesting and intriguing. There are two reasons why this covenant was made. Firstly, God was sad about this act. This was because God did not want to have to destroy His people. He made this preparation for the coming of His Son and the second coming of His Son. God knows the beginning from the end. He knew that His Son was coming to deliver the world from sin. He made this covenant and symbolized it with a rainbow, as a reminder of the coming of His to earth to take sin away from the world. This preparation is preparing for the second coming as well because at the second coming of Christ all His followers will be lifted in glory to join their Father and all others would be punished for not coming to Christ. God did not want to punish the world out of anger but out of the fact that they made the decision not to follow Him. This is the first reason.
Secondly, God’s covenant was to serve as a reminder to all humans of what God did in the past due to our sinful nature. This covenant is to remind us of the consequences of our sinful nature. Not only was this covenant made as a reminder to God as stated in the previous paragraph but also to man. It is a reminder for us to be careful of our ways. It is a reminder to keep us in check and remind us not live a luke- warm like but follow God entirely. When you read further, God used a rainbow to symbolize this covenant because man is more susceptible to believe the physical. If it were a spiritual rainbow, a lot of Christians would not believe it. In fact, there are so many Christian who do not believe in God entirely. This is a vivid and clear symbol that can be seen by all- reminding us to change our ways.
If you have seen a rainbow before you know that no one knows where the rainbow starts or where the rainbow ends. The rainbow can be seen from all over a town or city. This is so that it is visible by everyone. Also so that man will not say that they are created the rainbow or understand the formation of the rainbow. God wanted to show His Glory (through the beauty and uniqueness of the rainbow) and His Power (through the fact that it has no beginning and no end- just like God) through this covenant.
