Bible Reading: Genesis 20
Memory Verse: Genesis 20:2
And there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.
Good morning ladies and gentlemen! Another week has come our way with the commencement of another journey in the book of Genesis. This week, you and I would be exploring Genesis 20. Hope you learnt a lot last week; with the study of Genesis 19. I pray that you are excited about this week journey. Let us see where this journey takes us.
As I read Genesis 20, I will confess it was quite difficult to understand. I had to read it over and over again; still I was not getting it. The Holy Spirit told me to write the topic as “She is my sister.” This phrase has a lot of meaning. The phrase can symbolize a sacrifice Abraham made for Christ. It can also symbolize our spiritual beings. The phrase can be described as God’s solution to the problem in Gerar. Let us take a look at all these.
When Abraham called Sarah his sister, he had given up his wife to be taken by Abimelech. This is a sacrifice he made to God. Sacrifices to God may come in various forms. This is an example of such. Do you think it was easy for Abraham to do this? Let his wife, sleep and live in another man’s house. Would you have been able to do this? If God told you to deny your spouse and call him/ her your sibling, how would you feel? Can you easily do it? The sacrifices God places before us is sometimes unknown. However, he will always ask you for something he knows you have the power and ability to give up (though painfully and unwillingly), based on your level of faith and the type of relationship you have with Him. Do not worry, God takes you through this process to teach you very valuable and important things.
Looking at the second interpretation of the phrase; you and I, as long as we are in Christ are children of God. We are sons and daughters of God. That makes us all brothers and sisters. This is regardless of whether you are married or not. Abraham’s use of this phrase is in the right context. As Christians we are all brothers and sisters. We must all live together in harmony. It is sad to see that nowadays Christians are the most devious and most corrupt amongst each other. This is a very wrong and sad thing. I pray that by reading this you would be driven to change this behavior, by being an advocate for right living.
Lastly, the phrase was God’s solution to the city of Gerar. By Abraham saying that Sarah was his sister, God had an opening to work on Abimelech. If Abraham had not done so, Gerar would still be a country that did not fear God. The fear of God was brought upon them when Abimelech had a dream about Sarah. When God is doing something or solving a problem, you might not think His solution is the best; it always is. It can be a simple phrase or a war; just continue to trust that God has it sorted out. God bless.
If your reading Sammie’s Daily Dose for the first time and you want to have a father who has all the solutions to your problems; kindly repeat this prayer with all certainty.
Dear Lord,
I come to you today as a sinner. I admit that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus is your Son and He came on to this earth to die for my sins. Dear Lord, let your Son come and fill me. Lord, I ask that He cleanses me off my sins. I am ready to stand for you and profess your Name. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
If you repeated this prayer with all the sincerity of your heart, congratulations!! You are now a part of God’s family. Welcome to the greatest family ever. Heaven is jubilating on your arrival. Your fellow brothers and sisters are also excited to have you on board. You can now be exempted from the wrath of the enemy and of God. Not only do you experience this, but your whole family as well. Wow! Isn’t the God you serve so cool? He is. Not only do you enjoy this, but you enjoy other blessings God has in store for His children.
Being a child of God is a wonderful thing. The road might not always be easy, but God is with you each and every step of the way. Guiding you, helping you and encouraging up. You will never regret this decision; I can assure you of that. Two things I would recommend for you to do are;
Get yourself a Bible (in a version you understand) and meditate on it day and night. In Joshua 1:8, we are told that when you meditate on the Word day and night, you will be prosperous and successful.
Find a Bible- believing church to attend and fellowship with other Christians. This would help you grow spiritually.
I am excited that you made this decision. Welcome! If you would like some help or more understanding into anything, you can leave a message (adding your email address) and I would be willing and happy to help you out. Hallelujah!
Have a wonderful day and let God inspire you!
