The Genesis Story: Part 117- Anger & Self-Control

Topic: Anger & Self- Control

Bible Reading: Genesis 34

Memory Verse: Genesis 34:30

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land…”

Good morning ladies and gentlemen! How are you doing? How has your week been so far? Another week is here with another exciting journey through a book in Genesis. This week, we are exploring Genesis 34. Today with story about Leah and her brothers; we are exploring the consequences of anger. Let get right into it!

From the Bible verse we are exploring, we see that Jacob talks to his sons about the negative consequences of their actions- killing all the boys and men in Hivites, including the ruler and his son. This is to show you the widespread effect of acting in anger.

Anger is an emotion that turns us from the will of God. Why do I say this? Well, when you are filled with anger, you cannot hear from God. Your judgement is clouded with revenge and this is not from God. You end up acting on your feelings (which is driven by your body) and leads you to act against God. That’s sin.

The actions taken in anger result in negative repercussions to yourself and your community. In the case of Simeon and Levi, after killing the Hivite men, not only are they considered murderers, but they have brought about the fear of conflict upon their father’s (Jacob’s) household. We see this evident from verse 30 in Genesis 34.

Thanks to God’s love for us (His children), the negative consequences of our actions are forgiven. God is always ready to forgive everyone who acknowledges their mistakes and is seeking for a turn around. This part of the message is for anyone who has come to the realization that there needs to be a change in your lifestyle and decision- making. This part of the message is also for anyone who is ashamed by the results of their actions. I want you to know that God is ready to forgive you. Just prepare your heart and cry out to Him. He is faithful and just to forgive you.

Self- control is very important with emotions and feelings such as anger, etc. Self- control is not taught in one day! It takes a lot of conscious and conscientious effort to ensure that you are winning in self- control. Thankfully, God gave us a helper to encourage us and teach us how to exercise self-control in every situation. This helper is called the Holy Spirit. He is available to you all the time- 24/7. Just call on him at your point of need. He will help you through. Hallelujah!

Always remember that it is important to have self-control to help you hear and listen to God’s word. Amen.

The prayer below is for anyone who has been living a life full of guilt. A person living a no consequence life. God is knocking at your door; asking you to come to Him. Make the decision and say this short prayer.

Dear Lord,

I come to you today as a sinner. I admit that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus is your Son and He came on to this earth to die for my sins. Dear Lord, let your Son come and fill me. Lord, I ask that He cleanses me off my sins. I am ready to stand for you and profess your Name. Thank you, Lord. Amen.

If you repeated this prayer with all the sincerity of your heart, congratulations!! You are now a part of God’s family. Welcome to the greatest family ever. Heaven is jubilating on your arrival. Your fellow brothers and sisters are also excited to have you on board. You can now be exempted from the wrath of the enemy and of God. Not only do you experience this, but your whole family as well. Wow! Isn’t the God you serve so cool? He is. Not only do you enjoy this, but you enjoy other blessings God has in store for His children.

Being a child of God is a wonderful thing. The road might not always be easy, but God is with you each and every step of the way. Guiding you, helping you and encouraging up. You will never regret this decision; I can assure you of that. Two things I would recommend for you to do are;

  1. Get yourself a Bible (in a version you understand) and meditate on it day and night. In Joshua 1:8, we are told that when you meditate on the Word day and night, you will be prosperous and successful.

  2. Find a Bible- believing church to attend and fellowship with other Christians. This would help you grow spiritually.

I am excited that you made this decision. Welcome! If you would like some help or more understanding into anything, you can leave a message (adding your email address) and I would be willing and happy to help you out. Hallelujah!

  • Have a wonderful day and let God inspire you!
