The Genesis Story: Part 95- A Parent's Blessing!

Bible Reading: Genesis 27

Bible Verse: Genesis 27:4b

“…so that I may give you my blessing before I die.”

Good morning ladies and gentlemen! How are you all doing? How was yesterday’s message? Did you enjoy it? I did! I felt as though God was directly speaking to me. I hope and pray you felt the same. Today, we continue this wonderful journey.

From the verse we are looking at, it is evident that it was very important (to Isaac) that he blessed his son before he died. As I read the chapter again, it seemed as though Isaac was skeptical about blessing Esau.

From the last verse in Genesis 26, we see that Isaac was troubled by Esau because of his decision to marry two Hittite women. I began to wonder if Isaac hesitated to give his blessing to Esau. I wondered whether Isaac was trying to come up with a reason to justify Esau’s receipt of his blessing. I saw the whole thing as an exchange.

Then my mind was drawn to a parent’s blessing and its importance. Well, most of the time, the blessing of a family is made by the man (the head of the family). This is done as a way to entrust the family’s wealth and properties on to someone. It is also done as a way to show appreciation and respect. Most importantly, it is a sign of trust. The man (usually the father) is telling the son that he trusts him to make wise decisions and to take care of and protect the family name.

It is very important to many people. Just as it is important to God. Turning away from your parents means turning away your blessings from them. This is a sin. This is against the commandment that instructs us to honour our mothers and fathers. You have to do this; so that all will be well with you.

Your parents’ blessing is an earthly representation of the blessings we receive as children of God. God blesses you because He is proud of us. He knows that as His children we would be obedient and diligent-seekers of His word.

However, there is now a trend, where people are defying their parents. They do not even care about it. They do not respect their parents, nor do they listen to them. How do you expect them to bless you? The sad part is where some children fight over a father’s will after he’s passed away. Is this respectful. Just like God. Your earthly father knows you and knows what you can handle. He would not give you more or less; unless he knows you can handle it and you can prove that you can.

If you don’t have a good relationship with your parents, how do you want your relationship with God to be like? This because your earthly relationship with your parents are a representation of how your relationship with God should be. If your relationship with your family or with God not what you want it to be, work at it. Like everything else in this world, you require work. The amount of effort, time and energy you pump into it, is what you will receive.

Don’t worry, the Holy Spirit is here to help you and I. if you truly want to work on either or both relationships you can. It is important to receive blessings from both Fathers- the earthly father and Heavenly father. One common thing about them is that they all love you unconditionally (though God’s love is greater). It is first-hand experience of how and what love is.

For those who don’t have their biological fathers in your lives; it doesn’t matter. Your father or a fatherly figure does not necessarily have to be biological. The person/ persons can be a foster parent, an adopted parent or even your husband. It could also be a female. There is a father for everyone out there. God bless.

The prayer below is for anyone who wants to feel the unconditional love of God. Kindly say this prayer with all sincerity in your heart; welcome to God’s awesome family.

Dear Lord,

I come to you today as a sinner. I admit that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus is your Son and He came on to this earth to die for my sins. Dear Lord, let your Son come and fill me. Lord, I ask that He cleanses me off my sins. I am ready to stand for you and profess your Name. Thank you, Lord. Amen.

If you repeated this prayer with all the sincerity of your heart, congratulations!! You are now a part of God’s family.  Welcome to the greatest family ever. Heaven is jubilating on your arrival. Your fellow brothers and sisters are also excited to have you on board. You can now be exempted from the wrath of the enemy and of God. Not only do you experience this, but your whole family as well. Wow! Isn’t the God you serve so cool? He is. Not only do you enjoy this, but you enjoy other blessings God has in store for His children.

Being a child of God is a wonderful thing. The road might not always be easy, but God is with you each and every step of the way. Guiding you, helping you and encouraging up. You will never regret this decision; I can assure you of that. Two things I would recommend for you to do are;

  1. Get yourself a Bible (in a version you understand) and meditate on it day and night. In Joshua 1:8, we are told that when you meditate on the Word day and night, you will be prosperous and successful.

  2. Find a Bible- believing church to attend and fellowship with other Christians. This would help you grow spiritually.

I am excited that you made this decision. Welcome! If you would like some help or more understanding into anything, you can leave a message (adding your email address) and I would be willing and happy to help you out. Hallelujah!

  • Have a wonderful day and let God inspire you!

Always remember to show love to everyone, as this is one of the most important commandments God left for us – “Love your neighbor as yourself.” In every situation, before you take a decision, remember WWJD (What Would Jesus Do). Shalom.
